For those of us, like myself, who are on the academic calendar, things are in full swing! Still, it’s good to take a pause from reading, writing, and grading to talk a bit about music (I guess that’s writing, isn’t it?…).

In the next six weeks or so most music outlets will be publishing their album(s) of the year lists, and I won’t be an exception, keeping one eye on that wrap up, let’s check out some of the great tunes that I rocked in September.

  1. “Closer to Closure” — Jamie O’Neal

Jamie O’Neal returns this month with “Closer to Closure.” By the time you read this her new album Sometimes will be out. Be sure to check out “Closer to Closure” because it is guaranteed to leave you wanting more!

2. “Visitor” — Of Monsters and Men

Next on this list, Of Monsters and Men’s “Visitor.” Listen if you aren’t afraid of the dark and don’t mind having a ghost in your bed.

3. “Bad Storm Coming Tonight” — Collin Raye

Heading back over to the honkytonk, we have a new track from Collin Raye. If you’re going through a bad storm, you might be able to seek temporary shelter in this new track.

4. “pretend” — nothing,nowhere

Next up, an appearance from a favorite — nothing, nowhere. who, dare it be said about a musical artist by a music journalist, seems prolific.

Warning for flashing throughout the video

5. “If I Wasn’t” — Ashley Campbell

The version of this song that Spotify turned me onto featured Vince Gill, but the version without him is just as good. Check it out! And if you enjoy it check out the entire Something Lovely live sessions.

6. “Broken Dreams Inc.” — Rise Against

Usually when you think of comic books you think of heavy metal, and if the comic is called Dark Nights: Death Metal you might especially expect heavy metal, but that’s not this case for this soundtrack contribution from Rise Against. Check out the track! I can’t speak to whether or not the comics are good, I’ll have to check them out.

7. “Lighten Up Kid” — Mayday Parade

It’s no surprise that a new Mayday Parade track would end up on this blog! The video for it is an interesting combination of traditional music video and lyric video for the times.

8. “What Are Friends For” — The Sonder Bombs

The Sonder Bombs return this month with this absolutely devastating track that asks, “Baby, what are friends for // If not to treat like shit or completely ignore?” Check it out.

9. “Tainted Blood” — Blue Öyster Cult

Blue Öyster Cult makes the list this month with “Tainted Blood.”

10. “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” — The Unrighteous Brothers

This song is technically a cover. I continue to fail to exclude covers from this blog month after month. For this track Orville Peck and Paul Cauthen have teamed up to pay tribute to The Righteous Brothers.

What I was listening to in Septembers past?

For 2019 there was a lot of great stuff to pick from to highlight, I’ve gone with The Highwomen track “Heaven Is A Honky Tonk,” which has absolutely grown on me more and more over this past year.

For 2018 I absolutely have to take this chance to hype again slothrust’s “planetarium.” Because of my switch from Google Play Music to Spotify I forgot about this song for a while. Google Play Music’s transfer of all my playlists to YouTube Music helped me remember it.
